If you are really interested in this, here is some suggested reading:

Freud's 1923 book The Ego and the Id
Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920)

Freud believed our brains are divided into three parts: the ego, super-ego and id. The id contains our most primitive desires, the super-ego contains internalized norms (morality and taboos) and the ego is the referee who mediates between the two and considers consequences.

This is a fascinating theory and fun reading if you have the time.

Personally, I like to refer to it as my good and bad angels. My GA wins most of the time, but BA has some fun once in a while, and I usually end up regreting it later.
