-7t + 4t = -3t

The KEY here is that you're only dealing with 1 variable, T.

Think about it. If you have 4 T's (4T) and you take away 7 T's (-7T), how many T's would you have left? You'd have -3 T's, which mathematically would be written as -3T.

this is easy because both numbers have the same letter so we know that if we add a negative number with a positive number the result will have the sign of the greatest number in this case 7 that's why -7t+4t = -3t

-3t.

Think of the variable as something tangible, with positives the amount you have and negatives the amount you owe.

-7t + 4t could be thought of as owing 7 dollars and having 4 dollars. The net result (after you pay what you owe) is that you still owe 3 dollars.
-7t + 4t = -3t.
