Usually these are small neon lights with a long life span, but can just burn out like any other lamp

A lot of people don't know this but many kettles have a cutout switch fitted in case the kettle is boiled dry. Many people think the light is out, it doesn't work, so throw it away. Wait for the kettle to cool and turn it over. On the underside you may see some small plastic bits that will move with a cocktail stick. Give them a wiggle and usually they pop back in to place and the kettle works again.

I've never had problems with a kettles light not working why not try a brand that has no light and the button just clicks up or buy one of those wonderfully annoying whistling kettles for the hob.
