A money order I purchased from a gas station was returned to the bank for insufficient funds. I didn't find out until the people I was paying notified me that I still owed and now also owed finance charges. I don't even know what bank the money order would be drawn on. What can I do to get my money back and avoid the finance charges?

Well, I paid cash for the money order, but the bank account that the money order is cashed from did not have enough money in it. The company that I was paying said that the money order was returned to the bank, and basically they want me to repay. Pretty much it looks like I now owe twice as much plus the finance charges. Does anyone know what recourse I have in a matter like this?

I fail to see how a money order can be returned for lack of funds. a money order is paid in full for face value at time of purchase. did you buy it with a bad check?

How did you pay for that MO at the gas station?
This seems like a scam to me. Since mo's are usually paid with cash. I suppose I'd get all the info from those that the MO was supposed to be paying.
At the very least you should have some kind of receipt when you purchased the MO. What info is on it?

Do you have the receipt? How can a money order not go through? Didn't you pay cash to get the money order? Money orders are a way to ensure that a bill or other party is paid. I'm confused.

This is a total scam. Unless like someone else said if you payed for the mo with a bad check,I could see where they could call that insufficient funds. But, if you know for sure that it was cash take it to small claims court. No questions asked go to court.

Money order cannot be returned due to insufficient funds. it is issued only if you pay by cash or ATM card and payment should be instant. You probably got regular banks check. What can you do is to go there and ask them to remove that charge. But I doubt that they will do that.

You're going to have to go after the outfit you bought the money order from. You paid them cash for the MO - they blew it. You might have to take them to small claims court to get all the costs/finance charges etc, but that's probably your best bet. Let us all know the name of the outfit so others can avoid these idiots - thanks !

Hope this helps,

I don't think thats possible. If you get a money order, the cash was there when you bought it. The gas station might be responsible for selling bad money orders or something. Its not your problem.

take your receipt and call the toll free number on the back. If they refuse to do anything send them something in writing. You have to give them reasonable time to pay it (10 days or so) you also need to see what the maximum allowable "charge" you can have them pay you and that may cover your finance charges. If you have any problems after that take your proof that it bounced and your receipt to the police station.

The whole point of a money order is it cannot have insufficient funds. It is paid for up front. You are getting scammed.
