I really can't decide if they were right or wrong. The hospital SHOULD HAVE OBEYED THE MANDATORY EVACUATION and gotten all of the patients out of the city before the hurricane hit. My grandmother is in a nursing home here in New Orleans, and they were evacuated four days early, just to be sure they would be okay. I don't think any of the hospitals in the city obeyed the evacuation order. Patients died of hunger, heat, thirst, and lack of medication. Those doctors in that particular hospital were surrounded by 6 to 8 feet of flood water and threatened by armed looters (I know this from word of mouth, that part wasn't printed by the media). Possibly, they had no idea how much longer they would be stuck there and so they felt they were acting in the best interest of the patients.
Would you rather be quietly put to sleep by a doctor or left to drown, like the bedridden patients at St. Rita's Nursing Home? Those patients were left behind, abandoned by the staff. They were awake and aware and helpless when the flood water came in there; they drowned in their beds.
You are only seeing the stories the media is showing you. There are more hospitals here that have just as many terrible stories about abandoned patients, looters, and murders during Katrina.
