What I think about labels is that they are necessary to sort things. We sort things by labelling them. Think about it and you will realize that we can do little if any thinking without sorting things.

However, the label is not necessarily the thing. Things can be mistakenly labelled, and, even if correctly labelled, can change so that their label no longer applies.

Also, most things have more than one label. Most have lots of labels. For example, we are given a gender label, we are all labelled as smart or dumb, as good-looking or 'plain', as successful or 'loser'. Not all labels are accurate or fair, but if they are not fair they can be escaped. Sometimes even the whole label itself can be shown to be immoral or nonsense.

To sum up: we need labels, but they need not rule us.

I hate the little one on the back of my T-shirts.
Oh, you didn't want glib...
Obviously, people manage to fit themselves into pre-existing labels for their convenience and those of others. Few people decide to dress all in black with plenty of steel and tattoos do so by accident, and chances are they are trying to get something across. The same for someone wearing any other cultural garb, whether it's a burka or a Bill Blass shirt tucked into khakis.
It's kind of a visual shorthand for all involved, but it can be crippling for those who start to take them seriously. It's bad enough labeling music (even if it's unavoidable.) Labeling people as if that's the whole of the individual is a mistake at best, appalling at worst.

Even the term "Human Being" is a label, but is dyanamic, changes with culture and experiences.

Individuals should not label other´s, but in some way is a form or instrument to recognize what we think they other did...for instance: "he did good" is he always doing good? is good himself or the action? what are we labeling the person or his or her actions?

Labels are like stereotypes, sometimes positive sometimes negative that can harm other´s and even produce racism and discrimination like assuming that someone from "x" religiion is always good or bad

I think that people choose every label they "wear". You choose to shop at Hot Topic instead of The Gap. You choose to emulate "gansta" rappers and in doing so you choose the social consequences ("cops keep stopping me/ people look at me funny"). I think that "labels" will never go away because there will always be different social groups in society.

They play the role of a modifier. I have nothing against label as long as it is fair and true.
