You can go back in history through the eyes of those who witnessed significant events or through those who were alive at those times. Sit down with them and let them tell you what happened and how the world reacted and what they feel changed by the event. Young people today can "witness" history by finding such a person and sitting down and intelligently talking to him/her. For example, at 68, I lived though the assination of President Kennedy. We were in Northern Wisconsin for deer season but spent most of our time in the local hotel with many other viewing the TV reports which were sketchy at best. I spoke frequently with my wife on the phone as he was the first President we had been old enough to vote for and we were devastated as was almost everyone else. There was more shock and awe during that weekend then there seemed to be during "9/11" when we had just arrived on a business trip in Las Vegas and awoke to learn of the attack.
I can tell many stories of reactions to the President's death and our feelings while watching the return trip, the funeral and the subsequent events on TV. My high school locker partner was a resident doc in Dallas and was on duty when the President was brought it. When we got together a few years later, we compared feelings about the events we witnessed, he in person and us by TV and media coverage. Others in the room during that discussion were fascinated at the discussion and actually were also able to "witness" some of the events throught our eyes.
I was 7 years old when President Roosevelt suddenly died. There was a long parade down on main street in Milwaukee honoring his passing. I remember everyone's grief and sadness and all the "Movietone News" reports at the theater (we didn't have tv). You can't fully explain these event to people alive now but by talking about your memories you can come pretty close. Try it.
So, if you want to go back in time, find someone who lived or actually experienced significant history and sit down and talk to them. Take notes, record the conversation because as time continues, those who "witnessed" will eventuallay be gone.

Great question! i wonder whether anyone has mentioned President Kennedy's assassination. There is a lot of controversy about it - I would like to see for myself. (I was in Dallas once and visited the site.)
Also, I'd like to witness Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address.
You said "witness," not "change," so I won't speculate any further.
PS It looks like JFK did come up already. Probably Lincoln too. Maybe I would like to witness a general place and time rather than an event. See my parents as they were when they were young. Visit a day in my own childhood or see some relatives who have died again, if I could stand the emotions it would stir up. Witness what an average day was like for my ancestors 1,000 years ago, or spend a day in ancient Rome.
Then again, we don't realize how hard life was for most of history, and how "boring" by today's standards. No internet, no mass communications, no grocery stores. Spending the whole day churning butter doesn't sound like much fun. But I suppose when people did go to church, or have a dance, or see a play it was a big deal. Maybe the quiet made them more contented and less stressed people somehow! Even the mass use of the internet is only 10 or 15 years old, and already it's hard to get through a day without goofing off here or looking something up.
Jesus appears to be by far the number one answer, and I would like to witness His life and ministry too. But for Christians we are supposed to already feel His presence and I hope I already do.
The future presents tremendous possibilities, as others have suggested. It's humbling to realize that we're all going to be gone sooner or later and the people of the future will probably look upon us as very primitive.
This is the best question I ever read here. You should get 1,000 extra points!

that numerous times over the years I love the idea of time travel but I could never decide on what. See just one event ,eat just one chip lol ,
never could do either. There are so many interpretations of history it gets one crazy....
so I would like to go back and take notes, photos, and get back with what I learned. I would start with wanting to see the beginning of the universe there are many camps out on that one, but only one is correct. I guess bring along an independent witness so no one could say I altered what I saw. Then go to Egypt circa the time of Moses birth and see how it all unfolded. Then come back and see if the red sea parted as mentioned in the bible. Another trip go to Greece in the time of Hannibal and the trojan horse. I would love to know if Hollywood got any of it right. So much traveling..on to HG Wells to thank him for writing that story that got us all thinking about all this. A witness should be quiet and observe but that is on the old time machine model I have an interactive screen on mine! I would like to see Jesus , follow him for a while maybe go fishing.

A week or two just before the Crusifiction and some time after it.
This is one of the most archaologically undocumented events, when it should have tons of documentation.
Not one person etched the date and time in stone. Not even the Roman's made an entry.
Most of the accounting comes from Peter.
All the documentation comes long after the fact. The New Testitment was not started until 2 or 3 AD.
I might like to stay around long enough to see how this first church actually came about.

Then another time see how the crusades really were, interview some people hoping they will not burn me at the stake first O_- I would find out who built stone henge so all those druids can go home hehe....which would bring me ahead a millenium or so to see who really made those crop circles. I would not go back to change a single thing,it is only to confirm what we teach as history is acurate, I have many more events I would love to check out but this machine needs another over haul, got anymore chips I can't eat just one.

Since any one event is small compared to the total history, and by your question I cannot change history only watch the event, I think I would like to be present when my mother died. She died before I could get there, and I know she was finally free of all the pain and suffering she was going through. Now if I could change history, I think maybe killing Hitler before he got powerful, but with the ability to see what happens and then the option to change it if things got worse. How they could get worse I do not know, but they might have.

I would like to go back to ancient Rome and witness when Ceasar Augustus rose to power after the murder of his uncle Julius Ceasar. Ceasar Augustus' reign was a very beneficial one for the people of Rome and started Pax Romana which lasted for the next several hundred years. To be able to see some of the most popular people in history would be very exciting; Mark Anthony, Cleopatra, Octavian (Ceasar Augustus), and many more.
