I go with Ibanez, they are ok......

If you want to spend more money, get a Fender.

I agree with "admiralbob77". A lot of my friends that play bass started with the Squier precission bass, and some of them still use it as one of their favorites, even though they've moved on and have way better instruments. The squier has the style of a Fender, but you don't have to spend all the money, especially if you;re just beggining. And then Squier offers them in begginners packs so you can get a whole started kit that includes an amp and a strap for a pretty good price.

Good Lord, some of these answers...

With electric bass - as with any instrument - you "get what you pay for". The higher-end instruments have the best sound and consequently the highest price tags.

Trust me, it all comes down to the wood. The better the wood, the better your sound. Electronics only help so much.

For a beginner, I wouldn't buy anything too cheap - if your instrument sounds and plays like garbage, it can kill your enthusiam.

I think some good low-to-mid-range brands are Yamaha, Ibanez, some of the lower end models of MusicMan and Washburn, etc. Think $300-$500 range. You'll probably get a decent instrument that doesn't break the bank.

I played the Yamaha BB series for years and loved them for great action and decent sound - very good for slap.

Now I'm playing MusicMan - sound is "light years" better than the Yamaha.

Make sure you understand and read some of the following information before you decide on purchasing a bass guitar.

" The guitar with six strings that has the lowest pitch"
(wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn)

" Bass Guitar refers to electric and acoustic basses - stringed instruments similar in design to the guitar, but with longer scale and tuned lower in pitch. The evolution of the instrument was influenced by both the double bass (a cousin of the violin and viola da gamba) and the guitar. It shares things in common with a range of bass instruments. Bass guitars may be fretless, although fretted is more common. "
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_guitar)

" The acoustic bass guitar is a popular modern term to describe an acoustic musical instrument based on the configuration of basses pioneered by Leo Fender's electric Precision Bass. The 4 string acoustic bass traces its lineage to the lowest tuned instrument of the violin family - the double bass."

A lower end Fender would be a good start. It's affordable, but it's still of decent quality both for sound and durability, has a nice look, and should last quite some time for you. When you're ready to move up to a new bass, the Fender will still be a playable "old buddy" to you.

You should buy a cheap regular guitar (6 strings) because you can practice on it, and then later on when you are good with your guitar, buy a bass guitar b/c then you know how to play guitar and bass. Also, bass seems VERY easy after playing regular guitar.

a fender precision is a good bass guitar, but you can find better prices on them and other music items through wholesale music instruments such as musicians friend. you may be able to find them on the web and request a free magazine that has a lot of guitars amps etc with prices in it. give it a try, good luck

A Fender (Squier) p-Bass is a good place to start. It has some of the characteristics of a more advanced instrument (i.e. it is a Fender, and a lite version of the much-favoured Fender Precision) but has a good price point for someone not yet ready to make a costly investment.

The first bass I bought was a second hand 4 string from my local guitar shop. However my favourite bass was my little viola (same as Paul McCartney's) it is especially good if you have small hands.
