Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk in Northern California. Groomed beaches with old fashoned boardwalk rides and games.
Adjacent pier offers fishing, crabbing and great restaurants. Boat rentals and sailboat rides make for an especially fun day. From the beach you can watch surfers, sea lions and dolphins play.
A couple of nice hotels offer ocean views and there is a surfing museum within walking, roller skating, biking distance. O'neal's Surf shop is there. (Oneal invented the wet suit)
If I have to give this place any minus points, it's that the water is COLD. I learned to surf, there, at Steamer's Lane and the River Mouth BEFORE wet suits. I really laugh out loud when I see Southern California surfers in their wet suits.

My favorite beaches are along the Gulf Coast. They have white sand and clean water because there are no sprawling metropolisis nearby. Gulf Shores, AL; Destin, FL.
