HP, Compaq both suck.... and as for Dell computers... they may seem cheap with advertised prices of $299 and $399 but if you are planning on paying monthly payments to pay it off you will end up paying almost double and don't even think of missing a payment because if you do the interest rate goes up to something like 29% or something crazy like that. so that $299 may look good but should be considered false advertisement.
personally i build my own PC's and that $600 to $700 dollar HP can be built for about $350 to $450 bucks maybe lil cheaper
there are definitely PROs and CONs for both sides.... it all depends on how PC savvy you are.
anyways... i'd stay away from HP and Compaq for sure.... never buy an HP from Walmart mostly because you will not get a copy of windows xp or your system drivers on CD's so if your hard drive ever crashes... you are screwed......
Dell is the way to go for the price if you plan on paying cash and not doing the monthly payment thing.
and as for Mac's they are decent but unless you are loaded and want to burn money... then go ahead and by a new Mac...
get a Dell or Toshiba laptop... both are awsome..

Just talking brand names, I like Dell the most. HP would be my next preference.
Of course, I generally like to build my own computer unless I'm in the market for a laptop.

The brand is totally immaterial today as a guaranteed of quality. What IS important is service availability and the capability of the machine itself.
Computers have become applications--just like a washing machine or a refrigerator. You don't worry about brands with them do you?

the best brand to make laptops would be toshiba. but definitely dell is a good computer, they have the strongest business plan. i have a dell laptop and they build your computer to your specs. if you don't mind paying a bit more and you want nice looking, creativity, and innovation, apple is it.

I got a good price on my recent Dell purchase, but be warned - their customer service sucks really bad. I've heard this from others as well, though it was my experience too.

Your own custom built machine would be the best brand.
