I do online surveys because they're fun, and I get to see products before they're available in the marketplace. I very rarely receive ANY sort of remuneration for anwering them. What I usually get are points that I have to save up in order to trade them for (rather cheap) gifts. Making money off of surveys is an old wives tale. You would be better selling the use of your body to a drug company for product testing.

I got $3 once from 1 online survey. And I got $5 for one I did over the phone/mail. I don't think it's somehitng you could support yourself on or consider a career, but if you don't mind answering questions, it's nice to get a little something for it

I just cashed a $40 check from Surveyspot.com.
I cashed another $40 check from NFO MySurvey.com.
And I got a $25 Amazon Gift certificate from Lightspeed Points Surveys.
But that took me a few months to get enough points. You won't get rich doing it.
