check which gaskets are leaking and make sure all bolts are tight. GoodLuck

There were no softails in 1977. ( I'm assuming we're talking Harley Davidson. ) If in fact this is a Harley, it WILL leak oil.

do you mean leak or wet sump (the oil tank drains as it fills up sump) if its wetsumping either the oil pump is faulty or there is a stuck/missing non-return valve. can you start engine and does it re-fill tank or do you have a pool of oil underneath bike?

well man sounds like a leak
You might have to tear the engine down again to repair it.
