I have heard both sides. They say not to take it but then I have heard that you can take it to induce labor. Be safe on all counts and check with your doctor.

Yes and No ...
It causes your intestines to relax leading to diarrea, and the intestines are around your uterus. By the intestines reacting to the diarrea can trigger labor contractions! But taking castor oil has shown to do the same for the babies inside the uterus in some cases, causing the babies to have a bowel movement aswell. This is not so good. When a baby has a bowel movement in utero it is called "Meconiom" and can be dangerous to the baby at delivery if the baby takes its first breath before the meconium is sucked out of the babies mouth. It can do perm. life long damage to the babies lungs. Of course not all babies are affected by the castor oil but why risk it.
If you are wanting to help induce labor try going to the local herb shop and get Evening Primrose Oil Tablets. Here is what you do...
take 1 tablet 3 or 4 times a day and at night right at bedtime insert 3-4 "inside" as close to your cervix as possible. During the night they will dissolve over your cervix which will aid effacement or the thinning of your cervix. This WILL NOT cause labor only help thin your cervix. But sometimes thinning out is all you need to get things going.
To get contractions started if you are term there are tons of things you can do such as
*nipple stimulation ( not recomended can cause contractions to start hard and fast and may lead to harsh strong labor)
* herbal - black and blue cohosh - herbalist or Midwife can tell you how many to take.
*leg massages - go to the inner ankle, lay four fingers above the ankle then at that point go around to the calf muscle. Massage that area - remember it is a pressure point so if it hurts to push there then you are on the right spot... it is supposed to feel that way.
* Sex - semen contains hormones that can start labor but there really isn't enough in the semen unless you have sex like 6-7 time in one day. Not many women due are up for that.
This is just to name a few,I got this information from my Midwife last week and I bought the evening primrose oil today. I have a few weeks before I am due, so she doesn't want me to start using it until I am 36-37 weeks. But if you are term, go for it. Only thing you got to lose is a few hours off of your labor.
Good Luck and remember if your body isn't ready nothing you do is gonna work.

I took 2 oz of castor oil with my last one because my water had broke but didn't have any "real" contractions for labor. Was under the advce of my midwife. It didn't work for me, spent 8 hour with crappy, nothing contractions that wouldn't go anywhere and ended up on a pitocin drip anyways (typical for me). But I do know some moms that it did work for!
IF you do take it... mix it (50-50) with cold root beer or orange soda and CHUG it. Castor oil is thick, syrupy and tastes horrible!
best wishes on a happy delivery!

No, it can induce labor naturally. Just be prepared to be on the toilet for a while, and during contractions. If you take too much, it could also make you vomit, so don't drink a whole bottle. Trust me. My sister and I have both used it and had babies a few hours later.

If the diarrhea it causes dehydrates you, it can make labor even harder and present risks of its own. Beyond that, it hasn't been proven to have any effect on inducing labor, just cramps (your intestines, not your uterus). Stick to walking and sex - semen contains prostaglandins that stimulate your cervix to dilate. :)

I wouldn't say it's harmful. It won't bring on labour. It will keep you up all night with wicked diarhea, though. And, um, sex doesn't work either. But it's more fun than castor oil. =)

Yes it can cause you to have diarrhea which can dehydrate you and can cause the baby to pass and swallow/inhale meconium which can be dangerous.
