Firefox did an unbenounced update and switched me to google for my homepage.

Although, Firefox claims to be non-profit, the dirty little secret is that FF collected about 72 million dollars last year from Google last year, for making Google the default search engine so it would not surprize me,

Actually, it is legal. Firefox is open sourced and free. But, someone has to pay for developing the software. So, what usually happens is companies make a deal with search engines. Evertime you use the Google search box on Firefox, Google pays Firefox. Think of it as Google Adsense for web browsers. When you installed Firefox, read the End User License Agreement (EULA). There is nothing to stop you from switching back to Yahoo! homepage. They are not hijacking your browser's homepage. Google has the same arrangement with the Opera web browser. Before, the Opera browser costed $39 USD. They offer it for free now because revenue from Google supports Opera development costs.

It wasn't just firefox, but google also that switched your homepage. Every time you update firefox with the google toolbar installed, google will by default make itself the homepage. The same would be true if you had the yahoo toolbar. I have never installed any toolbars because they hi-jack browsers, consume memory, slow down your internet speed, and take up space, all while not offering anything of real value to compensate. If it were me, I would just uninstall google toolbar and reset your homepage to yahoo. I have the same exact setup, with my firefox being set to yahoo. Just bookmark google if you need to go often. Those extra toolbars are not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Firefox is bundled up with Google now and Google's toolbar gets installed with Firefox. However it do not update the home page if you uncheck a box while doing installation not to make Google your home page....
