My mother died recently and my Dad wants to buy a house in our town big enough for all of us to live in. What are some of the pitfalls we need to watch out for?

My wife and my father can get on each others nerves, but my Dad seems willing to talk things through and come to agreements about things. People I've talked to about this think it's a great idea and I can list a lot of reasons why this would help us out... no mortgage, help with the kids, a nicer house than we'll ever be able to afford at this stage in our lives, etc. But what experiences have those of you who have been in similar situations had?

The house is bought... it's a done deal. I know that this arrangement might be odd in the U.S., but in Europe it's not so uncommon.

Your dad doesn't want to be "alone". He wants to do something "productive" and "positive". Have him move "closer" to you so he can easily see you/wife/grandkids. If you "like" hangin' with him, try to find some MUTUAL interest you can share/partner in. For example... Real Estate Investing; or some other type of business venture (part-time for starters).

What kind of WORK do you do? It's FAR BETTER to be an EMPLOYER than an EMPLOYEE. Have your dad HELP YOU IN YOUR CAREER.

He'll feel PROUD to help. He won't be "lonely". You keep him outta your house (it'll probably please your wife to keep him OUT FROM UNDER YOUR ROOF, no matter if she "says" it's ok.)

Find a way to: 1. Help dad; 2. Take advantage of his generosity to secure the financial future his grandchildren; 3. ENCOURAGE him to date/meet women (at an appropriate time). Tell him you realize any NEW flames of his ARE NOT your mom, so he won't feel guilty.
4. Help the man feel wanted, and important. Your family will be blessed.

Good luck.
