If your lawn is brown in alto of areas it may be dormant from the heat. If only in a select few it may be because of dog urine.
If it is dormant, water and do not mow. When you mow, cut off only one third of the new growth.
For doggy problems flush the area with water- over and over. You might still have to reseed or cut in sod patches. If you notice that dogs like a certain spot flush by using a garden hose a full strength regularly. If it is your dog that is creating the problem pet stores sell a pill that is added to dog food that reduces the acidity of dog urine and dogs love it!

Make sure you don't have chinch (sp?) bugs, then apply a good fertilizer and plenty of water. I went through this last summer with my lawn. Looked great after a couple of months. I did have the bugs and had to kill them first.

Put mulch on top of it or add a lot more top soil to the area. Eventually it will grow.
