Neither one is right (although, since Lebanon itself is condemning all the attacks, Israeli and from Hezbollah, it is right for the moment).
The American government is largely with Israel right now in large part because the conservative movement (especially the NeoCons) has a large number of Zionists (people who believe that Israel should rule the entire middle east, the Christians among them because they believe that will bring about the second coming).

America is pretty much who decided to put the Jews back in the Middle-East. Not to mention that Israel is the only real democracy in the Middle-East. The two nations have a lot in common.
As to who is correct...neither of them are.
You ever read Animal Farm? Do you remember the end where the animals peer through the window and can't tell pig from human? It's the same thing. The Jews and the Muslims have become identical and cannot be told apart.

I think John J is pointing out one of the reasons the US has skewed its foreign policy in the direction of supporting Israeli' deployment of massive military force into Lebanon and Gaza and knowingly causing the death, maiming, and dislocation of innocents who just want to get on with their lives.
That reply however is not a direct reply to your Q.
In my opinion, neither side is morally justified to resort to violent means to achieve their ends or ideologies or religious ambitions.
Killing is flat wrong and killing innocents is especially wrong and it always dehumanizes the killers --in this case the IDF, Hezbollah, and Hamas. There is no such thing as a just war! A momentary response to an immediate thread may be justified but a response that drags on as it has in the Middle East leads to immoralities and degeneracy by all combatants because of the mounting toll of the deaths of innocents. Sadly, Even our US troops in IRAQ have fallen into this trap sucked in by al Qaeda and unappreciative Iraqi nationalists.

because the Israelis destroyed their country... killed 150 civilians wounded more than 300 in order to save two soldiers... keep in mind that the two soldiers could still be alive... who knows?!
