The first Stig (first and second series) was a guy named Perry McCarthy a former Formula 1 driver and test driver for the Benetton, Arrows and Williams teams and also tested for BMW F1. This was confirmed in his book "Flat Out, Flat Broke". The current Stig's identitiy is still a secret.
McCarthy was "killed off" at the beginning of season 3 as he had revealed himself so I guess we shouldn't try too hard to find out who the new one is as it'll just get him bumped off!!!

I heard a rumour it could be Johnny Herbert or Damon Hill,but then again it could be a number of people.
