Anything is possible. However, the US has had the technology that would destroy the world for many decades and that is probably what has kept the world out of a third major war.

Well- the true power behind having a nuke is the fear people have when you say you might use it. They then capitulate before you have to use it. Assured mutual destruction (between the US and Russia) is the other peace keeping measure of nukes. That being said, yes, the US did use 2 H Bombs to end world war 2, and they saved lots of lives by doing so. I have my doubts they will be used again anytime soon though, I would expect conventional missle strikes long before nukes.

It is possible, but not likely. Atomic bombs were used against Japan to demonstrate to the Japanese that they could not win the war, and if they persisted, their infrastructure could be totally destroyed. In conflicts nowadays, it is more important to weed the specific enemies out of a population while mimizing damage to the rest, and weapons of mass destruction are not good for doing this. You have to send in troops to knock on doors and look under beds for munitions.

You can rest assured that the US would only use a nuke as a last resort, after all other options had been exhausted. The US has had plenty of provocation in the past, and every right to use nukes, but they haven't. How much more proof do you need?

Retard. Not just us have the atomic bomb now. We restrained from using the nuke even after the Soviet Union has collapsed. Do you really believe we'll use it now? We are not the only country in the world with nukes now anyway, and even if we were we wouldn't use it. No one wants an apocalypse. 'Cept the mussies.

Going nuclear isn't something that the US wants to do. Do you realize that there are still missles pointed everywhere - who knows what kind of calamity and apocolypse that could cause?
Using a nuke would without a doubt begin a third world war.

Get serious. WWII was a very specific case under very specific circumstances. It would never happen again. The U.S.'s nuclear arsenal is nothing but a deterrent to crazed dictators like Iran and North Korea.
