Sing something that goes with the main riff of the song but isn't exactly the same. Make it different and interesting.
Use scales that aren't always used.
WRITE YOUR OWN MUSIC(not just lyrics, you need to know music too)
Get training.

The people that say smoking is bad for your voice are wrong. Smoking isn't bad for your voice, just don't do it too much. A little smoke will make your voice sound cool. Some of the greatest singers of all time smoked.

-do breathing excercises
start lieing down on the floor with one hand over your stomach and the other over your lungs (your goal is to breath out of your diaphram and not your lungs)
take a deep breath in and you should feel your stomach go out not your chest

-practice
take a tuned guitar or piano and go up and down the notes
you should start out slowly and make sure you are breathing correctly (try saying the word Ha) the H opens your mouth

-a common mistake is not opening your mouth enough so work on that if you need to image the kid from Home Alone screaming on the cover and put your hands up to your face

-while you sing focus on forcing the air out of your diaphram

Get a voice coach to learn technique and how to sing consistently well on a regular basis. There's nothing worse than hearing your fav singer sing horribly live. And Practice!!!!

Don't smoke, always warm up your voice first- don't just start singing. Sing scales to yourself softly and build them up. Project yourself- stand up straight and make your voice come out from your toes.
