Hi Speed 777
Thanks for your interest, and it's nice to realise it's not just me..
As for the language I am a little lazy and have the feeling of isolation..
As for going back and forth you are right it is cheap, but with no work then it a no no .
life here is slower, but I am in Nice, and a very expensive to live stuck in an appartment isn't my idea of heaven....
My girlfriend wants to go to Lyon, hence the reason I must decide now...
At least in the UK work isn't a problem..
thanks again for your interest...good luck with your future, as for the Football well, what can I say....except watch out for 2010

Okay, so are you trying to talk yourself INTO going to France, or OUT of it?

Positives
You may see your grandkids more often as you can give them a cheap holiday!
The woman you love is there
What will you be leaving behind?

Negatives
You don't speak the language (you can learn - and will because you have to!)
What will you do over there?

You do not say where you want to move to - that could make a difference! There is no reason why you cannot hold you head up in France just as well as you do in GB!

You will find it very hard assimilating - just as you would if you moved to another part of the UK where you know nobody. However, you need to know a few things:
Bonjour (with a smile!) means 'hello'
S'il vous plait means please
Merci means thank you
Pression is beer - if you ask for bier, you will get bottled beer, which is twice the price! Pression is pump beer!

As long as you are not in a tourist area (or you start off outside the tourist season), you will find the French very friendly. You just have to make the first effort. Let's face it, if a French person walked into your local and would not even say hello and please in English, they would get the cold shoulder. It is the same in France - it is amazing how many of them speak English if you try to speak French.

My advice is to go for it - you seem to be very dissatisfied with the UK! (oh, and I know some people who went to live in France in their 70s, but spoke no French whatsoever when they arrived - and they cope very well indeed!)

Good luck in your choice - whatever it is!

wow, I posted the same question about whether to stay in the USA. The consensus was to stay although I am surrounded by Americans who are racist bigots, or just plain ignorant. I think the idea was to stay and make the most of things and I did consder how crowded the UK was, not to mention the weather !
Personally I would move to France in a heartbeat, I love the country, although I would learn the language and either work for myself or find some sort of job.

Missing the kids and grandchildren must be the hardest of all, can't you just go back a lot !? it's cheap as I recall.

Finally, your last part about changing your personality, I hope it doesn't too much. the internet is a great way of keeping in touch with your roots - not to mention the football results.

good luck
