Spirit is twice the size of the vlx, 1100cc versus 583cc. Weighs 556lbs and the vlx is 452lbs. Seat height is 28.7 versus 25.6 for the vlx. Both bikes would be very rideable if you are tall enough and can handle the weight difference I would say go with the Spirit because you will want more bike after you get used to the vlx.

The VLX was my first bike, and I loved it...but if you're talking about a second bike, I agree that if your tall enough you may want to go for Spirit.
But, keep in mind your riding habits...if you use a motorcycle mostly for zipping around town, then the smaller VLX would probably be better.
PS - both of these bikes have chains that will need regular maintenance.

We bought a VLX new in 95 and are still getting good service out it. After I bought a touring bike my missus commuted on the VLX and rode if for pleasure for several years. Now that she has a Magna, I'm taking the VLX back. Its stylish and fun to ride.
I also have a large Honda cruiser.

get the spirit!
If you get the vlx, your gonna regret it within a week.
Because you'll want more power.
