unlock all the doors and windows, leave the gas on with no pilot light, and leave a sign in the yard saying open house, everything must go.

Clean the house before leaving, its nice to come home to.
Minimalize the amount of food in the fridge in case of a power failure.
Tell a trusted neighbor or relative where you're going and to collect the mail (Yes, be certain to not offer a choice)
Turn off lights and lock up
I'm curious to know where some of you go that you feel the urge to turn off the major utilities for 6 days? I've never heard of turning off the water, or electricity and turning off the gas just sounds dangerous.

Cancel your paper, have the PO hold your mail, and lock the door. Make sure that you have timers on lamps throughout the house to come on at different intervals so that the public "thinks" that you are at home. Some people leave music playing or a small TV on.

The last three thing we do are
Walk through the house making sure everything that needs to be is off and unplugged.
Then we turn the water-heater to vacation and if we have the air-conditioning on we turn it off, if it is winter we turn the heat down.
Then we close and lock everything.

1. Let one of your neighbors know you'll be oot, and have them keep an eye on your house.

I'm not sure where Sussane is going but I wouldn't shut off the water or my fridge! Clean house, clean sheets, locked door.

Put a few lamps on automatic timers (set to different times), stop or have someone pickup your mail and newspaper, and secure all windows and doors.
