To my ears it sounds like noise. I wonder if there are racial differences in the way we perceive rythm and melody (I'm Native American).

I don't like country either and I'm white like a ghost. It's just that country really sucks. "My girl left and my dog got ran over, Yeeha let's drink a beer."

Why do Indian folks like that wailing music of theirs? To most any caucasian it sounds like a lot of off-key yelling and noise. ;)

Seriously, I'm part American Indian and I love both Indian music, and country to a certain extent.

And the differences aren't racial, they're cultural. Country music is derived from Irish music...thus the reel and march-like rhythms to a lot of the songs. Notice that almost all of the true ballads follow the traditional Irish patterns, which is what makes them so easily remembered. If you've ever heard bluegrass (think Alison Krauss & Union Station), have you noticed the striking similarities to traditional Gaelic music?

American Indian music developed on its own, without the "civilized" world of Europe to intrude on which course it took. Where popular Irish music changed with the current fashion, and traditional music gradually fell out of favor, the changes to American Indian music were small and exacted over time, so what is performed today is very similar to what was performed two hundred years ago.

So what the music sounds like to individual people all depends on what they were exposed to. I've been fortunate to be exposed to all genres of music in my lifetime, and I've found a great many I like. For those who were raised on a limited set of genres--or who were unlucky enough to hear only the worst of a given genre, and get turned off it--country music is very much an acquired taste.

Both American Indian and Country music resonate with me, though, and I'll continue to listen to them as long as I live.

A lot of it isn't the music at all but the lyrics that represent the lives of middle America. The music itself, like other genres have changed a lot over the years, but the lyrics still relate to the majority of Americans.

that borders on bigotry so why try to categorize a type of people by their color??? i bet all you listen to are drum beats played on wooden logs with animal skins draped over them. lol.
