Maybe. Is Utopia possible for us? Of course not. In order to achieve that, we need to completely eliminate the following:
1. Money
2. Politics
3. Religion
4. Capitalism
5. Conservatives
6. Over-population
7. Limited resources
8. Homophobes/ Racism
9. Financial Differences/ Class systems
With those thing exist in this world, we'll never achieve an Utopia state.
A major World War will use up resources, but reduce population and eliminate Financial difference/ system since people would die off or left with nothing and start with Zero, but will create instable politics and religion control, since lots of war are involved with people in different religion believes.
A Natural phenomenon would do a lot of damage as well. But for now, Jews (Israel) and Capitalism/ Conservatives/ Rich people (US) are in control of this world, starting wars, revenging with invasive military diplomatic policy, and terrorisms around the world causing chaos, we're no where close to achieve Utopia.

Utopia is not possible. As I used to tell my former students, one human characteristic will never allow utopia to exist: greed.
As far as near extinction is concerned, have you watched the news lately? Wars, famine, floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, fires, biological weapons, death of animal species, depletion of natural resources, global warming...we may do it to ourselves one way or another.

Utopia is not possible since it ignores human nature. Unfortunately, even when we're down to the last two people, they'll probably still be figthing with each other over something.

It depends on what you mean by "Utopia". I doubt peaceful co-existence is possible for humans due o our natural competitive natures. People will always try to be "one up" on their fellow humans; they will always wish to be "better" than someone else. And usually they will use any means necessary to achieve their goal.

Even WWII didn't really impact our population. There are 6.3 billion humans. We aren't going to be going extinct anytime soon.
