Take lessons with either a private teacher or a band director. It can be very frustrating trying to get a sound out at first and a teacher can help you with that. Starting with a teacher is also a good idea so that you don't form any bad habits that will be hard to change later by teaching yourself. Good luck with your playing!

Take a class at school, with a tutor, music store, or community college. You might very well get frustrated if you learn it by the book.

There's a lot to learn. If you haven't played an instrument before you have to learn about keys, scales, sharps, flats, rhythms. For the flute you need to learn the keys on the flute and the embrochure (how to form your lips over the mouthpiece to make a sound).

This is not to discourage you from learning the flute--if this is something that you have dreamed about go ahead, as Belva Davis said "Don't be afraid of the space between your dreams and reality. If you can dream it, you can make it so."

The flute is a really easy instrument to learn, I'm sure as long as you know how to read music, you'd be able to pick it up easily with a book & tape. But I learned with an instructor, so....

Practice practice practice! if you really want to be good you have to practice all the time! even if don't want to, force yourself to! k, there was this one guy who was talking to this famous golfer. he was alll complaining and stuff that he wanted to be as good as him. the golfer told him,"As soon as your willing to go out and just hit golf balls till your hands are bleeding then come back and tell me you want to be the best." It doesn't happen over night, you have to work for it.
