Seems that it once promised to create a worldwide community, connecting people on the principles of goodwill, sharing of information, and understanding. But on this service (and others) it seems to boil down to hucksters pawning crap ("CheaP VIagara/CIAli$ tablets, clickhere!!"), sex-starved, illiterates ("I-M horny, R-U-2?"), or advertisers. Is there still something meaningful to salvage from this online universe? Or is this as good as it gets? :p

I think the internet is a good thing but there can be a lot of sifting thriugh cr*p to get anything useful. It has certainly helped me. As a stay at home mum, I have found the internet a great way of making new friends and talking to people with similar interests without having to worry about what to do with the kids while I am socialising! I have used the 'net for a lot of different things from advice on parenting and relationships to blogging my own poetry.
I do find it sad that there are so many sad perverts and wasters on here and other places but usually if you know where you are looking.

I think it delivers what it promised and more. If you search for:
hucksters pawning crap ("CheaP VIagara/CIAli$ tablets, clickhere!!"), sex-starved, illiterates ("I-M horny, R-U-2?"), or advertisers.
then that's what you'll get.
I use the internet to search for anything I want and I get it very quickly.
For example: Maps/directions have been a great help to me. I drive confidently anywhere in the country and not get lost.

I see you are just one of these glass is half full kind of people.
I do all my banking online, pay my bills, check my accounts and credit cards. I purchased a watch and saved $700. I also buy most of my designer clothes online and save a bunch more on that. I run a web site that makes me $1,000 per month for doing nothing. I have earned well over $30,000 I never would have had were it not for the internet. That's just part time income for doing a little work on the side in the past couple of years.
For shopping, gambling, poker and banking the internet is great. If you were expecting some kind of magical meeting of the minds in a new global community where everyone gets along and exchanges their interesting ideas for the good of humanity, you are expecting a little too much.

The Internet is a mirror reflecting all the aspects of who we are as humans, the bad as well as the good, the petty as well as the noble.
There's no magic incantation for making everyone nice and everything good. All we can do is take responsibility for our own actions, try to be part of the solution instead of the problem, and hope that others are inspired by our example and act in kind.

With all the mixed feelings out there the Internet it is what you make of it. If you are only seeing what you complain about in your question then look at other stuff. The Internet helps people with all sorts of possibilities, problems and in general life! It as most things in life as I said it is what you make of it.

There are plenty of good sites and also plenty of the other kind. I have not been to even one of the bad kind. My sister-in-law taught me how to watch out for the bad (porn and adult) sites when I got my first computer and I have followed her advice. Her advice was simply: don't reply to SPAM. Also, don't click on the names of sites that you don't recognize. It might be a porn site or an adult site. She said that she accidentally clicked on an adult site once and because of this her Inbox was flooded with SPAM so she had to contact the webmaster of the site before they stopped sending the SPAM but they did.

In certain aspects it's been overused and abused. But also at the same time the internet is a great resource and makes it easier for the general poopulation.
