Take the laptop apart, then remove the keyboard, and the old hard drive will be visible. You'll then have to remove the old drive, and use an adapter to copy all of the data on it to a large desktop drive, then you can "ghost" all of the data back onto the new laptop drive. Why did you think the guys at the repair shop were going to charge you what they quoted you?

STOP... you do not have to take the machine apart! You simply have to locate a plastic panel on the side of the case (it's about three to four inches wide and about a half inch high). Once you've done that, turn the machine over and look for a screw in the bottom perpendicular to the mid-point of the panel. Remove that screw, turn the machine back over and remove the panel. Once open, you'll notice the drive inside the bay with a tab to pull the drive out. Grab the tab and pull the drive straight out of the bay. Just reverse these directions to install the new drive being cautious to insert it straight so as not to bend any of the pins inside the machine.

you can always put in a new hard drive. i am pretty sure its a laptop you have. the harddrive is usually right in the front, kinda below the spacebar. you should have a tray right there. unscrew the screws and pull out the HD. you can buy a new one at compusa or any other computer store.

likely. decrease back then they we both likely PATA drives. in spite of the indisputable fact that, the hardware is going to be completely distinct between the structures. do no longer anticipate it as well. in case you intend on reloading the OS and rebuilding the application from scratch, then it is O.ok. in case you pick it to only boot and look like the Gateway equipment did then it is going to no longer artwork.
