no, leogurl, I'm not saying all artists are liberals. If you look at the platforms of presidency in the past, liberals have typically leaned towards funding the arts, education, etc...and yes, I credit liberals for stopping the privitization of social security. And we used to have a surplus there, until GW decided to give $300 back to every tax payer. Yeah, that was smart. But I would like to thank you for actually answering a question for once. And by the way, if those republicans existed today, they would be called liberals

Do National Parks count? Yeah, Teddy Roosevelt was a Republican, but since Reagan's time, Republicans don't seem to think there should be government owned anything. Many contemporary Republicans would prefer to sell off the national parks to the highest bidder.

You think the liberals started education? LOL.......allllrighty then. That's a new one on me.
Yes social security was starting during FDR's presidency, are the democrats also responsible for the mess it is in today? This was not a good example for your side. The tax for SS was 2% when it started, it is now over 12% and 19Trillion in debt. Thank you liberals.
The arts - Are you saying all art and artist are liberals? Sounds a little narrow minded to me.
Republicans abolished slavery.
Republicans ended the cold war
Republicans brought home the hostages in Iran
Republicans brought about National parks
Republicans - Panama Canal
Republicans - keep congress from taxing the hell out of us.
How is that for starters.

Disagree very very much.
Our education system was much better before Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education. We subsidize art that nobody likes. Social security is the world's largest pyramid scheme. It will bankrupt the Gen-Xers and Yers because they are smaller generations than the Boomers so we will pay in to support them all in old age and there won't be anything left for us. I do not brag about any of the cited examples.
Early progressives did help us with things like - 40 hour workweek, overtime, and benefits.
I don't brag often but when it comes to what our government has done, we have the finest military in the world. We have one of the least excessively regulated economies in the world which allows people with talent the opportunity to create wealth for themselves and others mostly without harming fellow citizens. Our government also doesn't excessively intrude into our private lives allowing us our right to live and pursue our own form of utopia - so long as it doesn't interfere in our neighbor's right to pursue happiness as well. (Yes, I know there are many issues and problems but I'm speaking about this as compared to the rest of the world. Perfection is probably unattainable.)
I brag more about what government doesn't do than what it does. What it does, it usually does poorly - including education, social security and art...

Liberals are responsible for SOME of the things we brag about, and conservatives have some things to brag about as well. Here are just a very few of those:
Liberal bragging rights:
- equal rights for women and minorities
- the 40-hour work week
- the weekend
- safe food and drinking water
- cleaner environment
- balanced the budget
- consumer protections
- workplace safety laws
Conservative bragging rights:
- contained communism (although liberal presidents Kennedy and Carter did that too)
- contained inflation
- opened new markets for exports
- strengthened national defense
- national highway system (Eisenhower)
Truthfully, the best collective actions & government programs this country has made have survived the scrutiny of both liberals and conservatives. IMHO, as a nation, we are at our best when all ideas are challenged but at least are given a chance.

Well, nobody (Clinton) is perfect, BUT- business was booming, Clinton resolved the Bosnia conflict with a minimum of bloodshed and utilized peacekeeping forces. We weren't losing our privacy (banking, phone records, etc.) The Clinting administration wasn't being indicted/sentenced for fraud and corruption like many repubs are now - (DeLay, Libby, Duke Cunningham). Clinton's "whitewater" was for a mere 300k and lacked merit in court, also the Monika case lacked merit.
So, were not bragging about how well we rebuild after Katrina, WTC, Irag, Afganistan, or spend the surplus into record debt, take away military benefits, ...
..and by the way... what ARE we bragging about anyway...?

You are proud of the education system, SS, and the arts? Whoa! I've totally underestimated how misinformed someone could be.
All those kids finishing high school who can't read, the broke SS system, and public funding for some guy who takes a leak in a mason jar and dumps a crucifix in it; yeah, that's something to be proud of.
sheesh.

It's hard to answer a question when you put "all" in it. I'm sure both sides are responsible for some good and some bad. For all the great things that cons have done recently, try "A refresher course on the war in Iraq", a NY Times column by Paul Krugman".

Disagree. The areas I am proud of (R&D) would be better off without all the red tape the liberals try to strap on them. It seems to me that liberals like to mess up our R&D and a good example is stem cell research. People would say that republicans are against it but in reality they are not. They are against embrionic stem cell research. Did you know that adult body fat contains stem cells which are actually better cells than the ones found in embrionic tissue? I'm sure America's got enough adult fat cells to supply stem cell research for the next fifity years! Why do liberals insist that it has to be embrionic? I know some Republicans are for embrionic stem cell research but just because they bear the name Republican doesn't mean they're not liberal.
