AT FOUR MONTHS YOU SHOLD AVOID LYING ON YOUR BACK FOR EXTENDED PERIODS AT SIX MONTHS YOU SHOULD STOP LYING ON YOUR BACK COMPLETELY AND YOU CAN SLEEP ON ANY SIDE BUT SLEEPING ON YOUR LEFT SIDE ENSURES MAXIMUM FLOW OF BLOOD AND NUTRIENTS TO YOUR BABY!!

The reason you should not sleep on your back is not for you! It's because sometimes when you lay on your back you can decrease circulation to your baby. You are not there yet at only 4 months and even later once you should sleep on your side if you wake up on your back just roll to your side. It isn't life threatening, just better. Your circulation in your entire body and from you to your baby is better on your left side. Your baby needs lots of nutrients and oxygen through your circulatroy system, they can't get it any other way. Just like the breathing techniques from the lamaze class you have yet to take. The breathing is not for your benefit, it's for the baby, the more you breath the more oxygen your baby gets. Once you get a little bigger try using a boppy pillow or some other kind of pregnancy pillow to make yourself more comfortable. Trust me, the bigger you get the harder it will be to get comfortable on your back or stomach, it' s just natural.

It is best to sleep on your left side as much as possible. By doing this, you are increasing the blood flow to the placenta which increases the oxygen to the baby as well as other nutrients the baby needs. But sleep how you feel the best. Believe me when you get closer to the end your sleeping habits will be extremely limited. It is not good practice to sleep on your back though. It causes a strain on your spine. Don't get worried if you wake up on your back, simply roll to your side and continue getting rest. FYI you can sleep on your belly, it will not hurt the baby but it does eventually become difficult for you to be comfortable that way. I am 31 weeks now and I start out every night on my left side with a pillow between my knees and one wedged under my belly... ofcourse this is not how I uaually wake up!

You can sleep on either side, but they say its better to sleep on your left cause it gives better blood flow. But trust me, it gets uncomfortable after awhile just sleeping on the one side.... And you should sleep on your back, but if you wake up in the middle of the night and you are on your back, dont worry. I still take like 10 min naps on my back cause i get the best sleep. I would start as soon as you have a belly....

Good Luck!

Actually, I was told not to sleep on my back when I was pregnant.

If you are only 4 months, then you can still sleep however you are comfortable.

Once you start getting big, sleeping on your belly will be uncomfortable, and if you try to sleep on your back, the baby will press on your arteries/veins and muscles and it can make your circulation have problems.

Sleep on your side, either one. Get a body pillow too, that will help.

Congrats, and good luck!

You can sleep on your stomach for as long as you want as long as it is comfortable. It is best to sleep on your side if you can, the left side being better.

If is not safe to sleep on your back, especially later in the pregnancy, as it restricts the flow of blood and nutrients to the baby.

The best way to sleep is on your left side. This allows for better blood flow to the uterus as well as helps reduce heart burn and reflux. As far as when you should do it... you can sleep any way you want that is comfortable for you. As your uterus and baby grow you will find it difficult to sleep on your back. Sleeping may be comfortable but trying to get up and function afterwards will be painful. The added wait on your spine can cause major back pain. Do what you want when you want and only if it is comfortable for you.

they say after 20 weeks you should start sleeping on your left side. It is the best position for your baby so that nothing get supressed. But don't freak out if you wake up and your on your back or your right side just simply turn over.

You shouldn't sleep on your back starting about about 6 months, on your stomach when you start to show, or on your right side after 7 months or so.

i read that you should sleep on your left side. i heard the circulation is best that way. the circulation sucks if you're on your back, but that's the position i still find most comfortable (at 5 months), plus, on your back will eventually get really uncomfortable from the weight of the baby. on your belly should already be uncomfortable... it's been for me.

You can sleep on your stomach as long as it is comfortable for you and your doctor hasn;t told you otherwise. You can sleep on your back or either side. If you are on bedrest they recommend lying on your left side a majority of the time. Or, at least they did for me 5 years ago.
