The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathon Stroud. In a parallel London, magicians hold the seats of Parliment and pretty much run the world thanks to enslaving all manner of djinni (deamons) to do their bidding. The writing is incredible and the storyline just keeps drawing you in all the way to the end, where you wish there was at least one more book in the future.

Title is deceiving, it isn't really about motorcycles...more metaphysics. Good book!
