Why should people who have not paid contributions into a social security system be eligibel for benefits? Why should housing benefit be paid to those who simply go on and on having children, demanding to be housed with no intention of ever working? I dont think that the vast majority of people in the UK realise that there are no equivalent benefits paid in the rest of Europe, or maybe they do and thats why there is such an issue with immigration.
The benefits system was originally designed to help those who could not help themselves, there is jobs for all out there, people just have to get off their arses and apply for them. While the state continues to give the handouts, the people will fall deeper into the rut of not bothering, knowing the pieces will be picked up with a nice fat Giro cheque.
Its simple, if you put money into a bank, you can take it out, with a little interest, same principle applies, if you pay into the system, then if the need arise, you get help

A woman after my own heart! YES I DO!! My husband and I both work hard to survive (just) and don't claim any benefits and wouldn't either out of self-pride (like the majority of the decent Brits). It also makes my blood boil when people complain that they aren't getting enough or their house isn't big enough for their illegitimate sprogs (yes, not all I know to those of you jumping out of their chairs to moan!). My neighbour is like this and now I totally ignore her because any more of her drivel and I'd bang her head against a brick wall. She has a brand new two bedroomed house most people would kill for - just the one child who is a nightmare and said that she only gets £100 per week (on top of free rent, council tax, dentistry, school meals etc). It's a disgrace and an insult to the rest of us and we should all demonstrate outside no. 10! Oh and this will make your skin creep - she's 42 now (gave up work years ago because she's got post natal depression even though he's 6 and at school full-time??) and said she's done her bit for society - aarrrrgh!!! I appreciate the need of the people who actually deserve and need help but to those who can't be bothered should be made to or their benefits scrapped. There's a job out there for everybody even if it's stacking shelves at Asda (which even I've done before). It's time for the Government to get TOUGH ! P.S. To those above who are obviously blinkered - there are many, many, many people like this where I live and that is just one small section of the country so I know what I'm talking about otherwise I wouldn't be complaining. My neighbour is just one example. I have many stories but I've ranted enough!

I am afraid that your comments are too simplistic and generalised and probably just written to get people's backs up!
I work in the Housing Benefit system and yes there are fraudsters and chance-rs - its called life - you find them wherever money or help is involved.
You cannot simply generalise and say that all people on benefits are not deserving of them - most are! Didn't follow your argument that other countries don't have our benefit system. I wasn;t aware that Great Britain followed the example of anyone, I was under the impression as a mature and wealthy country that we set examples, not follow them! If you know of anyone flouting the benefit rules, don't bellyache here about it, pick up the phone and report them! I think that you are a little out of touch - "giro's" hit the dust a couple of years ago, however not being properly informed doesn't seem to stop you spouting!

Despite the use of the phrases "GB plc" and "UK plc", predominantly by Tory politicians, there is no such company and there never was.
It is idiotic to compare one's country to a private company, and by doing so, British people sanction indirectly the extreme and medieval exploitation by the rich and powerful that is a part of daily life in Britain.
And subsequently British people are still subjects, while all the other nations in Europe (and most of them world-wide) are made up of free citizens (who have rights the British don't even dream of).
And regarding your suggestion to scrap the social welfare, well, if you want to see another massive explosion in crime, go ahead.
Thatcher cut a lot of social benefits and deprived many working class people of essential support. The results were economic recession and a massive increase in crime. Obviously you have either forgotten about that or not learned anything from history.

I am guessing that the totality of benefits paid in the UK is nothing compared to the amount of money the government loses in tax evasion or by supporting the offspring of the royal family.

If you are proposing a witchhunt cover all the bases and at least make it interesting for those of us that would prefer to see the rich and priviledged suffer rather than the poor and disadvantaged.

the situation at this time is terrible, so many people unwilling to work and not being prompted to work.
Voluntary unemployment is a sickness that if untreated will, and has become heredity to the offspring of these social scroungers.
i have grown up among some unemployed on council estates and to see the lack of effort in there teens to get out and make some money was confusing, some of them would have said, "yeah he's loaded" but in fact the case was that i was a hard worker from early on, and i have my family to thank for that mind set, and that mind set is whats lacking in voluntary employed people.. and the soft government that dishes the lot out to them..

so many working people being robbed of their hard earned cash. something has to be done... sharpish..

it could be superb to think of that it could - yet i think of the fact could be regrettably distinctive. somewhat whilst it style of feels that our charges only seem to circulate bigger and better, and wages will develop stay below the cost of inflation. yet mps are paid further and extra money, no longer forgetting the guy who employed his son, and paid him a daft quantity of money.....
