About 12 years ago, there was this big psychological study that was finally completed and published. The authors asserted that they had shown that 3 things defined a person's overall sexual being. The big deal was that these 3 things, they argued, were totally independent of each other...while everyone thought they were fixed at birth and totally dependent. The 3 things are: sexual orientation (heter/homo), sexual self-identity (male/fem, or assertive/passive), and physical sexual anatomy.
Every different combination of these, they said, should define a distinct "gender". If you include bisexuals in this, the numbers can get really large. Anyway, one combination certainly would include lesbians who view themselves as "assertive". The decision to adopt a "butch" appearance though, must I guess, arise from within the person since they would naturally want to look they way they feel. (I'm just guessing, but it makes sense to me!)

Well, there is no one reason. People have different reasons for their behavior. Some probably enjoy the power often associated with maleness and masculinity or want to be identified as "dominant". Some may adopt male trappings out of convenience- male clothing tends to be more durable and less expensive, for example. Still others may just have naturally masculine features and so may appear masculine completely unintentionally.
Also, the appearance of masculinity is not limited to homsexual females- there are "butch" hetero females. Likewise, there are very feminine lesbians (male fantasies aside).

Simple, homosexuality is nothing but sexual confusion. That is why homosexuals tend to act like the opposite sex. If homosexuality was just genetics, homosexuals wouldn't feel the need to "role play".
Homosexuality usually occurs with social incidents. Such as men who are called "gay" because they aren't as "tough" as the other guys or are still virgins. Girls often turn to homosexuality if they had terrible encouters with men, or never feel pretty enough to compete for men. Both male and female homosexuals will claim they were "homosexual from birth", but that is solely to hide their insecurites and confusions they are ashamed of and strugled with.
This is why homosexual men sometimes act like women. They become substitutes for the men who feel they are not fit for a real woman. Same as with homosexual women. Some act as men as a substitute for women who, for whatever reason, do not want sexual relations with men.

Some are various forms of transgendered, although male-identified lesbians are a minority. (Most "butch" women are very happy to be female and do NOT consider themselves male, or wish they were male.)
Most lesbians (whether "butch" or "femme") simply don't care to follow society's ideas for how women should dress or act - instead they dress and act for their own comfort and to suit their own personalities. For some women, this means various takes on traditionally "female" appearance and behavior... and for others, it means that "traditional" gender attributions for appearance or behavior do not play any part in how they choose to dress or act.
Plus, if you really don't care about society's "rules", men's clothing is usually about half the price of women's clothing. And men's clothing is usually designed for comfort, where women's clothing is more often designed for looks and presentation, NOT for comfort.

a better question may be...
if you're a lesbian, and are attracted to females, why would you want to BE with a woman that looked and acted like a man?

I've often wondered that myself. Is it that they are a man trapped in a woman's body? Or, is it that the rest of us in society think a woman should look a certain way and we're uncomfortable with one who doesn't.

Maybe some females feel they should have been born a male? Perhaps they are more attractive in a masculine role? Just my thoughts . . .
