Even my sisters think like her: they call girls who are non-greek, the "americaneetha"-- in a very scary tone of voice.

My mom grew up in Detroit, and is Greek-American.

she would think with this, the culture can be preserved and she can have a familiar thinking and speaking daughter-in-law. But i do not think she has the right to force you into something like this, only do it if you agree with her.

I for example don't prefer women of my own caulture because they expect too much of men and don't give back enough to justify their expectations.

Either way, do wat you think is right for you and don't let her control you, only take her word as advice and not as a command.

I wish you the best.

She want a daughter-in-law she can relate to and who she thinks will respect her and do things the "Greek" way, just as she does. It's kind of old fashioned thinking these days when you live in a multi-cultural/racial society. The Greeks even had a word for this: xenophobia.

I think its the same in many cultures around the world. A lot of close minded people don't want interracial grandkids. Or in your case maybe she just wants to keep the greek culture alive.

Many people wish for their children to marry "their own." Just a few generations ago, for instance, Italians only wanted their children to marry Italians; Irish people only wanted their children to marry other Irish people; Germans, etc. At one time all of the European nations (even after immigrating to the US) wanted to keep their families purebreeds.

that's not just a Greek thing, lots of religions want you to marry within your religion, you should respect your mother's wishes, if you can...it would make things alot easier down the road, I.E. with kids....no confusion there or fights over religion lol

There's nothing essentially wrong with that. The consideration should be love. Not keeping up with the Joneses. Or the Cacoyannises if you prefer. ( Yasou. )
