Although the government supports a free press (most of the time) the press isn't truly free because it is all owned by huge multinational corporations with their own interests. That is why the internet is so amazing, it allows people to see for themselves what is going on and read how stories are being reported by different sources and different countries.
And if you are asking whether freedom of the press is a good thing, obviously it is. Go to China sometime and see what it is like there with blacked out internet sites and banished reading. It's all about control because once the press is controlled, the people are a little bit easier to control

I would say the press is free to print whatever they want as long as it won't offend anyone and as long as the government says it's okay.
