Sequels rarely better the first film because the story gets lost in the increased special effects budget like the matrix or the blair witch project or the exorcist but some do get it right here is my top 5.......
1 T2 - If you see the full version with Sarah Connor as a grandparent in the park, you will know there should never have been T3
2 Bill and Teds bogus journey its excellent
3 American pie 2 - Stiffler rocks
4 Tomb raider 2 - better all round movie
5 Desperado sequel to el mariachi - Banderas is so cool in that

Besides being (quite rightly) suggested by several people on here, The Godfather II is the only sequel to ever win the Best Film Oscar.
Then again, I liked Star Trek II, so what do I know?

The Godfather: Part II. Simply because it adds to the original by acting as a prequel as well as a sequel. And, it has the stunning scene when Corleone is stalking Fannuchi over the rooftops, before killing him. Stunning - add to the fact that it doesn't really have the feel of a sequel.

Before Sunset.
Unlike all of the other films mentioned above, it was not meant to be made. It wasn't planned, it wasn't another book that was already written, it wasn't based off the success of the previous film. It occurs ten years later, same cast, also older, who did it because something was nagging in the back of their mind to answer the question of Before Sunrise : did they meet again?
Beautiful movie, a sequel for the most insignificant of reasons.

depends on if you mean part of a trilogy or not.
I think T2, while part of a trilogy was made without a plan for a third film, meaning it was a true sequel, and one of the best. Superman II and Aliens as well.
Godfather II and Empire Strikes Back are the two best that are actually part of a pre-planned trilogy.

There are several brilliant ones that spring to mind:
The Empire Strikes Back
Godfather 2
Terminator 2
Aliens
The Two Towers (is this really a sequel?)

Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan is probably my favourite, but Godfather Part II is probably the best. Toy Story 2 deserves credit for improving on an already-great original.

you ve already been given the real answer s from every body above, but I would like too add ( and I not saying if it was a good film or bad, I would rather stay neutrual) but mission impossible 2 actually improved on a crap first film(oh what was you thinking Brian de palmer). But thats what happens when you get a top asian film director(way to go john woo, but please, don t be such a sell out, making films in america) just a same it star such a **** who loves him self too much!!!
