ok no worries people, i do look after my fish very well, and theres no need to set the RSPCA or whatever on me, i promise they are not in harm, i was just wondering what the best way was to stop continuing in this circle! crikey, some people take things wayyyy to seriously, the fish are happy, i am not "slowly killing" them as some people may suggest! thanks for that particularly crappy answer...

what size is your tank? is it filtered? how often do you feed your fish?
any tank smaller than 18" is too small for 2 goldfish. if its a bowl then its definatly too small for 2 goldfish.
if your tank is not filtered consider buying one, they are low maintenance and will keep the water clean.
if you do have a filter do not take all of the water out of the tank at once, 10-20% once a fortnight is enough. do not rinse sponges in tap water.
if its not filtered again do not take all the water out at once just change half once a fortnight. goldfish have an average lifespan of 10-12 months in unfiltered water compared to 10-12 years with a filter
do not feed your fish more than once a day. preferably only feed them every few days. this is not cruel - dumping excess food which posions the water is cruel. if you go on holiday for 2 weeks or less do not put a feeder block in. these are designed for tanks with 30-40 fish in. he will be fine with no food trust me.
most importantly note - Goldfish are not as hardy as they were 10 years ago, they are bred in high quality filtered systems now and can not survive very long without the proper care.

get a bigger tank and buy 1 more fish so you have 2 if the tank is 2 small for 2 1 will die but if you have a bigger tank 2 will live each fish needs several pints of water each. 1 will commit suicide if there is not a enough room for them both so you'll have 2 keep replacing 1 fish and the old 1 dies but if you get a bigger tank you may be lucky and keep both alive i have kept fish for 26 years and always change my tanks as the fish grow or i add a new one no deaths unless they have a disease from the pet shop.

I would simply not replace the fish. Fish have an attention span of about 4 seconds anyways, so they don't have friends, just continually new acquaintances. Otherwise- give them to a friend, or a family member. Generally someone with small children will like fish as afirst pet for learning responsibility.
This way you are out of the loop- and you have given the gift of fish to someone else.

First of all fish don't have a very long life span. As someone who has all kinds of fish, the one thing you have to do when your fish dies is take a water sample to your local fish store. Most will test it for free. Once the results are in take the time to talk with the sales person. How big is your tank. The usual rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon of water. They can usually suggest other fish that are compatible with the fish you have left. Fish have been known to have a calming effect on people.

My ultimate response- do your research and get a better set-up..if it's dying there's obviously something missing eh'?
Btw, not all fish like company but others do..that 4 second attention span is only in certain cases. Some fish when seperated from a mate or fish that they lived with for a long time can sometimes get depressed and even die. FIsh can have "friends".
Ultimately if you can't do what I suggested then quit keeping fish >.<

if it seems like a waste of space having one fish in a tank, you could downsize the tank if applicable. (of course if you make the area too small for your fish, he will be even less active and end up appearing lonlier.) you could put a mirror behind the tank as a cheap way to give some company. you could add a little bubbling scuba diver or other bubbler to make the tank seem a little more active and possibly entertain your single fish, but then you'd have to put out the money for the aerator though. if your goal is to get out of a pet fish hobby, i agree that bringing your remaining fish to a pet store is a viable option, because no fish could ever possibly be lonely there.

Bag them up and take them back to the petstore. You obviously don't want them and aren't very good at taking care them. Unlike the answer above- fish normally have a pretty good life span. Goldfish live up to 40 years, Cichlids normally make it into the double digits, even tropical fish should get a couple of years in.
You are buying fish you don't want just so that you can slowly kill them. Please stop- it is not nice.

When one dies, buy one of the same type. If there is something chemical in the water that is causing the deaths, they could both go at relatively the same time.

buy two more of the same type. then when the oldest one dies then you will still have two, er... because you cant be sure of when they were born, you dont know how long they will last, ask the shopkeeper for ones of the same age, he will know. buy a pump, light and buy an algae eater, they will get rid of all algae on the glass, they will also get rid of loneliness, plus algae eaters are very shy fish, they will not mind being on their own, they'd quite like it probably.
