Asians, Blacks, Hispanics and anyone else who isn't white would fit into this category. I am Black and I sometimes refer to myself as a "person of color". I'm sure some fellow minorities don't like this. What do you think.

I enjoy being a person of color. It sets me apart from the majority in this country and makes me apart of the worlds majority.

Colored? That term went out in the '60s in the U.S. and much much later in South Africa after apartheid fell.

"Person of color" seems an oxymoron. Isn't white a color, too?

Why refer to yourself as any color? Placing a dopey label on you seems to suggest you want people to form an impression of you based on your color rather than your character. I don't go around saying my wife is Japanese. I just say she's my wife. I don't refer to my friends as my Chinese friend or Italian friend. They are just friends.

Man, Americans are messed up about race.

None of them are of good origins so just call us what we are...Black Americans. Being colored, African American, black, *****, etc. all had negative effects at one point at time. And even today can and are still being used in a negative connotation(not saying by anyone in particular but they are). Black is the current most acceptable word seemingly, so use that.

We're not from Africa, so we're not African American. We're not ***** in the sense that we have evolved from them but are no longer that. We're not truly black, cause who wants to be classified by a color that typically stands for everything evil in this world(plus we come in so many shades, none of them really black). We're all colored, from the Anglos to every one else. We're Americans by default in a sense.

But being American and being black are the closest things we can relate to, so call us one of them.

P.S. black and white are not really colors. Find the closest art book and it can tell you that.

American is what we should be called. We're to disconnected for us to truly be much else.

Thats a nice way of putting it since everybody is mixed with some many different nationalities, so "a person of color" really hits the nail on the head

I think the phrase "colored" is pretty appropriate, because white is the absence of color. I don't really know why it offends people. But then again saying "black" offends people too. It's hard to know what is appropriate.

i think if we put half the energy into working on the issues that effect "people of color" as we do on debating arbitrary terms we would be much better off. i don't mind the term, although it does sound silly at times. Are white people, people of non-color? it's all kind of funny. i suppose it beats the hell out of getting called ******* or chink but still, way too much time wasted on terms that really don't matter . those who respect you will regardless of politically correct term of the moment and those who hate other ethnic or racial groups will hate the regardless of what they clal them.

I think being sensitive to racism and things of that sort is important, however I am against oversensitivity. I was never a slave. My parents were not even slaves. I am also against affirmative action. This country was not founded so one race could pay for another to live, just as the 14th amendment guaranteed that this country was not meants for one race to dominate another.
