I wondered the exact same thing! I refused to sign up when my friends asked me to... but now it's like the biggest thing ever! I think it has to do with the way they got music artists into it; it makes users feel good when they have... say, Eminem listed as one of their friends.

An earlier networking site, Friendster, made an effort to prevent some of these problems but keeping tighter control over the rising demand for interface and personalization methods.
When My Space started, the decision was made not to maintain this restrictive level of control, and try to make it more user friendly. The result was to include user written html options for user pages and the ability to use html in almost all aspects of the site.
The problems you express arise from two sources: First, malicious users, who use this increased freedom as a means to hinder or crash the site. Second, inexperienced users who are not good enough with the html to correctly accomplish the results they want. Likely, when you look at a page on MySpace which is not pleasing to the eye, this second reason is the cause.
When the interface does not work, it is more likely one of the two reasons I have listed. The basic interface (when a user starts) is almost elegant in it's simplicity. It is only when a user overloads his/her page with pre-fab hacks, linked images, or third-party scripts that the interface fails.

i believe it began in europe and spread from there. the reason why its so popular is that people can leave messages and sort of create their own website and it makes them feel smart to be able to do so many things that they used to think was hard. in my opinion it is extremely boring but that's just me. And thank you for the idea about using myspace for networking purposes.

MySpace is so crazy right now because it where you have another life instead of going out drinking and kickin it with your firends. Its just intresting to see how people design their page with their pictures. Shows alot about them without really knowing alot. Anyways, myspace is coo..it keeps me busy and entertained.

I think people like it because it's an easy way to keep in touch with people. Call me anti-social, but I don't care. . .

it's a place where people can post their hundreds of pictures of themselves, write blogs that no one actually cares about (although they'd like to think they do.) and generally advertise themselves. I think it's a conceited-human thing. :D
