I recently found a nice size diamond ring (my guess is 2 or 3 carats) in a mall parking lot. Is there anyway of knowing who it belonged to so I can return it to the rightful owner?

Exactly. Mine is certified and it's only 1/2 carat. And the code is actually a laser inscription. A jeweler will also be able to tell you if it's real, whether there's a code or not.

Kudos for wanting to return it.

Most diamonds do not have codes etched in them. However, I would have a jeweler take a look at the ring. Remember, not all that sparkles is diamond.

If a diamond has been certified then there is a code on it. You need to take it to a jeweler and let them look at it. They should be able to assist you further.

I doubt they have anything etched into them, unless someone purposely or stupidly wanted to reduce the value of it
