What is a blog?
A blog is short for Web Log. It's an online journal that anyone can write, and anyone can read (restrictions are possible with some applications). Basically, people can write about themselves, or about their day, or opinions, whatever, and make it available for others to read.
Why are there so many of them?
I have no idea. They are growing in popularity. I have never read nor written a blog before, and I can't see why they're so popular. I think people like to see what's going on with everyone else, so they read their blogs. Or, perhaps it's the other way around. Perhaps some people want to TELL everybody what's going on with themselves, but how many others really care to read it?
Are they safe?
Yes and no. Don't include information like your full name, address, or phone number. Also, try to stay away from incriminating language or threats. And don't say "Jimmy who sits next to me in class is a jerk" becuase Jimmy might come into class the next day and clobber you because he read your blog. If you're going to blog, stick with topics that won't reveal who you are or get you in trouble.
Hope I answered your questions.

A blog is a horrible term coined by the media, which is actually short for web-log. I really loathe that term... but anyhow...
People used to journal on websites back in the early to mid 90s, and since then, it has become a way to express a view point, or to basically say what you want, or even be a diary... People will put anything and everything into a web-log / blog / journal. Personal stuff such as where they went drinking the night before, to raunchy material, to complaints about their job, co-workers literally anything.
They are as safe as you want them to be. If you put your name, phone number, address, cell phone number, sex (M or F) you are probably giving out too much information about yourself... although maybe you want to share it, personally since anyone can look at it, I would advise against.
Be advised, employers do go and search out people's weblogs. These are considered public domain, even if it is in "MySpace" or "Facepages". Things stated in a weblog can be read by anyone or no-one.
From a personal perspective, i don't read them because I really don't care what someone who i don't who lives in Greenland had for dinner for the last week.

a blog can be used for several things, sending out update info on outside-of-computer things, rating the latest movies, and some people even use them as a diary. As to whether or not it's safe, that would depend on what you're using it for and where you're putting the blog. I would advise not giving out too much personal info if you're thinking of starting a blog.

Blogs are online journals. Blog stands for weB LOG. They're very safe. There are some networking sites (Yahoo 360, MySpace) that allow blogs, too.

A blog's just like an online diary that everyone can read.
There are so many of them, because supply and demand I guess, people like to share things in that way.
They should be safe, just don't give away information that you want to be kept private.

Blogs are online journals.
Like MySpace, Livejournal, Diaryland, Teen Open Diary, etc. etc.
They can be safe. You always have the option of making your blogs private or friends only. They don't have to be public you know.

A blog is a journal you keep on line so that other people can read how many times you farted in a day. Why someone thinks they are so important that others want to read about them is beyond me. Very self centered populace.

blogs are basicly and online journal, there are so many simple because they became popular
I think they are safe to an extent. If you don't put up any personal information, location, full name, address, phone number and such then they are safe, just be very careful what you say...
Just watch what you put in one, not only because of online stalkers but don't say like I hate so and so because they may find it and read it!
