Gender can sometimes be visible as early as 12-14 weeks gestation but it is usually seen somewhere between 17-20 weeks. The reason the doctor waits is b/c gender is not what he/she is looking for. At this point they are looking for normal fetal development and if gender can be determined that is just an added perk of the ultra sound.

At my 18-week ultrasound, the technicians determined we were going to have a boy, although they were unable to tell us and we had to call our doctor for the results. Some States and Provinces refuse to disclose the gender, do to abortions or suing if the baby turns out to be different than what was determined through the ultrasound.

I was 20 weeks when I found out the gender of the first. 28 weeks with the second. Different docs, so they did the ultrasounds at different times.

The majority of Doctors do it between 18 and 20 weeks. I am 17 weeks and I can't wait either. My next appointment isn't till the 26th.
