When my toddler was 10mos, he took 2 naps a day. One in am and one in the afternoon. They were about 1-2 hrs. each. So he napped about 3 hrs out of the day. When he was obviously worn out in the evening, I would put him in his crib (around 8 or 9) and he would fuss maybe 2minutes and roll over and go right to sleep. It was great!!He's 23mos. now, and we just put him to bed by himself, and he goes right to sleep---no fussing. This is because that's what we got him accustomed to. It took patience and hard work for the first couple of weeks, but you CAN train a baby. Just gradually wean him down on the daytime naps, and also gradually teach him to lay down himself at night. EXAMPLE: put him to bed at 8 or so, let him cry 4-5 min. before you go to soothe him. The next night wait 6-7 min., and a little longer each night. He will eventually adapt to being alone in bed, or tire out and give up on fussing. Just make sure he's sleepy when you put him down....that's the key!

if he/she is sleeping that long during the day that probably is the reason for him not sleeping through the night. maybe wake baby up from nap after 2-3 hrs and let him do a an activity like swimming or playing outside in the sun an hour or two before bed and maybe it will wear him out enough that he can sleep through the night hope its of some help

My son is 8 months old and he sleeps anywhere from 3 - 5 hours a day. My theory on it is that "sleep begets sleep" and also, studies have shown that the more your baby sleeps, the bigger the brain. That is GOOD!
It's not an issue of how much he is sleeping - it is WHEN he is sleeping. Try to make sure he is up at least 2-3 hours before his bedtime.
To keep them up, just make sure there are a variety of activities for them to do. Keep him well fed, entertained and change things up once in awhile so that he doesn't get bored.
Good luck!

5-7 hours during the day is a bit much. If he still needs 2 naps, make it no more then 1.5-2 hours each. Keep him stimulated as well while awake. You also might want to try to cut out one of the naps and let him sleep 3 hours.

That's a LONG nap! My 12 mo. old sleeps 1 1/2 - 3 hours during the day and 12 hours at night.
I would suggest that you try to put your baby to bed earlier, but feed him really well before you put him down....a dinner, a veggie, and a bottle. He just may sleep longer at night and not take such a long nap during the day.
As for keeping him awake during the day....read, practice crawling or standing, Baby Einstein videos are great, for for walks if it's not too hot where you live.....keep him entertained. He will crash when he's tired.

Hi i have a 18 month old and when my daughter was his age she would sleep 2-4 hours a day. I would wake her up when i was getting ready for work. My in-laws watched her. They would keep her entertained intil lunch time then let her take a nap. I told them not to let her sleep over 4 hours. Then a few hours after i got off work she would go to bed fine.

My daughter is 5 1/2 months and she takes 3 one hour naps in a day. She usually takes her naps before 4pm. I read somewhere that you should limit their nap time after 4pm so that they will be good and tired before they go to bed at night. I also suggest a nice warm bath right before bed. Read a book and have a bottle. He should sleep better at night. It will take a while though so don't get discouraged.
To keep him up I would just play with him or have your caregiver play with him. Put him around other children so that he can interact more and play and wear himself out. Let your babysitter know that he/she cannot let him sleep all day long.
Good luck!
And here's a feeding, sleeping schedule for you to look at :
