The simple way around this is to go to Yahoo or MSN and create a second free email account for yourself. Use a different name than your main account. Use this account for all sites that ask you to register and create an account with them. That way if they sell your email address to a spammer, it won't matter. You can just log into that account once a week and empty the bulk folder. Then the only email you get at your real email address will be mail you want to get.

You could sign up for an email you don't plan on using much to avoid getting spam mail, although generally when they ask for your "password" they mean what you want the password to your account on the website to be, not the password to your email.

If it asks for your email password, don't do it. It may be asking you to create a password to use for your to-be-created account.
If you want, you can give them your email/password, but I'd advise changing it in a jiffy.
