I have several BIG branches hanging over my garage from my neighbor's tree. Also I just bought a new car and the birds that sit on the branches over my driveway just dirty my car and do damage to it. It is costing me more money than normal getting the car cleaned because I have my whole car's roof covered in bird crap. Does anyone know?

The second letter in this legal advice column from the Houston Chronicle says you can have the branches trimmed yourself, but be very careful not to harm the tree. You would be liable if you killed it. You can't force your neighbors to trim the tree.

Pretty much everywhere you have the right to cut the branches that hang on your property. You cannot cut past the property line though, so be careful. Have you discussed the matter with your neighbor? I would suggest talking to him about it and saying that you will be cutting the branches yourself if he won't bring someone in to do it. Now, be careful if you do cut the branches because if you do it wrong and damage the tree you can be held liable!!
