Check that there isn't a leak anywhere - sounds like oil or grease is getting into the main compartment.

Aeg are usually brilliant, but like everything, they have a limited lifespan. How old is the machine??? I think it may be losing oil from a drum bearing, and will need a dose of mending. I had an AEG for 13 years without one single breakdown; I now have a Miele which has gone 11 years with no breakdowns. Ya gets what ya pays for!!!

Seriously does it smell??? Old, rancid soap fat will go black. If this is the case, get 2lb bag of Washing Soda, empty into machine, do a very hot wash. If its old soap, it will clear, otherwise its likely to be the bearings. If you propose a DIY job to change the bearings, they are "Standard off-the -shelf bearings". AEG will charge you the earth for them, your local bearing supplier, alot less. ALL bearings have a number engraved on them, that is the type you need. Contact your local bearing supplier.

this happened to me not so long ago, it may be that your clothes are getting stuck between the glass and the rubber sealent arond the sides, it creates a sort of 'burn' are you overloading the machine? if you are not then make sure you push the clothes right into the machine before you turn it on, i hope this helps.
