Are you criticizing me?!?! (Yes, I'm kidding.)
Seriously, I think it's because it's hard to tell what someone's tone is in e-mail or in a forum type of exchange such as this one. So the answerers to your question may have assumed you were being sarcastic when in fact you were being genuine.
Also, people are almost completely anonymous here, so they feel freer to take a more extreme position and to state their position in more extreme terms than they normally would (e.g., in a regular conversation).
Finally, they are motivated to get points. So a question that *seems* to solicit opinion rather than facts is an easy way to get 2 points, because everyone has an opinion. Of course they misunderstood the real purpose of your question, but from their perspective it doesn't matter; they got their 2 points.

It depends on the way you ask. You can ask "What do you think of Laura Bush?" and you will get far different answers than if you ask "What do you think of that crazy crack-hoe Laura Bush".
And you are right, almost nobody on this site stops to think before answering, they just spew their blind hatred. It's sad.

Repukes are a bit sensitive to any question that involves legal. That is because most of them has lied or stole their way into money and they do not like to be reminded of it. What the hell they buy elections every time. No one would vote repuglican if they knew the truth so that is when they tell their best lies.

I think there is a lot of defensive people out there. They seem to think that to ask a question is to attack their beliefs. If we didn't all have different opinions this site would be useless. You can't persuade someone to believe as you do by insulting or belittling them. It just give more credence to their way of thinking.

Look around. Many people are really trying to criticise something when they pretend to ask questions.

no one will get anywhere fighting over sides. if the sides cannot talk to each other with respect for one-another's ideas, no progress will be made.
