Stem cell research?

Okay, I have a question and maybe I haven't thought this all through but I think it could be a good idea but maybe not because I don't have all the facts but here it is: You see all these things about stem cell research and how they want to create fetuses so they can take stem cells from them. Then you see all these commercials on tv about umbilicle cord bloodbanking so that later you can use the stem cells from it if your child gets sick and needs stem cells. So here's what I was thinking: Why don't they just take a little umbilical cord blood from the babies (who's parents give them permission to) and use it for stem cells on other people instead of creating the fetuses to take stem cells from? I dunno, maybe I'm crazy and don't have all the facts but I think that sounds like a good idea to me. Do you think it's a good idea? Would it work you think?

They do that, but there is a couple problems with it. Cord stem cells taken at birth (called Adult Stem Cells) are not as powerful as embryonic stem cells. The cord stem cells can only be transplanted in the same person they came from and there is not enough of them to provide any real relief.

A good reason why embryonic stem cell research is illegal is that it would allow for a teenage girl to get pregnant on purpose for the sole intent to have an abortion and sell the embryo for LOTS of money (Almost $50k per egg at current rates). They could get pregnant again and repeat the process forever.

Its all still in the research stages. The stem cells in an umbilical cord and stem cells from fetuses are very different. Scientists just want to research all of the possibilities.

I believe that the reason is that there is a belief that these stems cells (from the cord blood) are already processed enough so as not to be able to attain the potentiality to be used in any person, but would only be able to be used for that baby at some later stage in life.

It won´t work. The convenience of making a clone and using her cells as stem cells (hence killing the fetus) is the DNA compatibility. Your body wont reject your own stem cells as they have the same DNA.

I believe the umbilical cord of the babies can be used on siblings, but with a greater chance of rejection (that makes sense, as the DNA would be made out of the same parents).
