I hope someone has an answer. I hear farmers talking about bushhogging their pasture, yet none of them can tell me why they do it.

Cows prefer grass that has not gone to seed. If there are large patches where this happens, then we mow the pasture which is done with an implement called a brush hog, which works like a very large lawn mower pulled by the tractor, cutting off the tall grass with seeds and leaving the nicer green grass for the cows. Thus your term brushhogging.

A Bushhog is a heavy duty mower/cutter for pasture/field.
Unlike a lawnmower it can cut down growth 3/4" thick.
This is a step in agriculture maintaince. Like cutting the lawn. Usually a step prior to discing.

If a pasture is left unchecked, trees and scrub brush will grow in it and will eventually choke out the grass that is necessary for the livestock. If left long enough, it would turn into a wooded area.

A bush-hog(or brush-hog) is like a very large lawnmower. They use it to cut down weeds, small trees and shrubs in fields that aren't being used for their animals, hey, or crops, and to basically keep the area looking neat.
