Yeah, that's possible. It was running so inefficiently that it couldn't keep up and ran until it burned out. That's why you need to clean them once in a while.

Clogged coils on a refrigerator is so common that it is not direct cause - basically it just makes your system run LONGER to maintain the same temperature (clean=energy saving).

What happened is the compressor had to run too long to cool it to the set point for too many days and it burned out early.

Considering most modern refrigerators last years until the coolant escapes : yeah - it could... a lot of cat hair - you murdered it. Live and learn.

When I moved into the house I bought it was NASTY!! The people had 2 dogs and a cat in the house all the time, and evidently never vacuumed so hair was everywhere. The refrigerator was working ar first while I was cleaning the house up, but then it stopped cooling. I pulled it out and probably vacuumed several pounds of hair from the back and bottom of the refridgerator. It has worked fine since then. But YES it is EXREMELY NASTY and can MESS UP the refridgerator.

It is possible for that to happen, though you would have to check with a repair person. They issue is that the coils were there to help to remove the heat associated with the refridgerator. The cat hair could have (1) inhibited the heat from 'bleeding' off the coil and/or (2) insulated the heat from getting out. With less heat getting out and the thermostat telling the compressor to work harder, it is possible to blow one component or another.

I am not an electrician but I do know the basis of how the refridgerator works. I would contact an electrician, who specializes in that item, for a better answer.

Yes because it has to work twice as hard to cool the food so it get twice the amount of usage on the parts so they wear out twice as fast.
